Guide to choosing cylinders
Welding in M.I.G.-M.A.G. some materials
1. Soft steels, carbon
The carbon steels are welded in direct current with reverse polarity (wire-electrode connected to the positive pole) applying exclusively the M.A.G. Applications range from the use of CO2 alone, to Ar-CO2 blends in various percentages (the most widespread is 80% argon, 20% CO2).
The greater the percentage of Argon present in the mixture, the better the characteristics and arc stability.
The welding characteristics are very good, especially in short arc where consistent welding baths are obtained which allow applications in all positions.
The use of wires with silicon and manganese content allows eliminating the impurities present in the base material and obtaining good quality welds.
It is necessary to prepare the joints with bevels with thicknesses greater than 3 mm.

2. Stainless steels
The stainless steels are welded in direct current or in pulsed current with reverse polarity (wire-electrode connected to the positive pole) applying exclusively the M.A.G. The shielding gas used must be composed of Ar + CO2 or Ar + O mixtures. The percentage of Argon must not in any case be less than 98% of the mixture to avoid a strong oxidation of the chromium present in the base material. The thicknesses of the joints beyond the 2.5 mm must be rounded off. The filler material must be particularly suited to the quality of the stainless steel to be welded.
To perform a good weld it is advisable to grind the points.

3. Aluminum and its alloys
The aluminum and its alloys are welded in direct current or in pulsed current with reverse polarity (wire-electrode connected to the positive pole) applying the procedure M.I.G.
The shielding gas used is generally pure Argon. Pure helium or Ar + He mixture can also be used.
For flat welding, regardless of the thickness, the spray-arc or / and pulsed-arc technique is used; instead the short-arc technique is used on the welding of thin thicknesses in vertical and angle positions. Considering the characteristics of aluminum it is advisable, instead of grinding, to mill the points themselves.

4. Other materials
The welding process M.I.G.-M.A.G. it is also used on materials such as nickel and its alloys, copper and its alloys; for all these, direct current with reverse polarity is used.
As regards the welding of copper on thicknesses greater than 5 mm it is advisable to use the procedure M.I.G. however, considering that the current intensities must be adjusted according to the welding position and the thickness of the joints.
